DUCK ROCK (influnces)

 Malcolm McLaren Died today. Man, his record "Duck Rock" was a huge influence to me, more so then any other Hip Hip album that came out in the 80's...well, next to "Wild Style" and "Run Dmc" self entitled album. Duck Rock is on my all time top 10 Hip Hop albums ever. It was also the very first record I ever bought to use for Djing back in 1983.



In 1982... I remember clearly riding in my sisters boy friends supped up 1965 mustang. Billy was blasting "Buffalo Gals" down Grand Ave in Spring Valley more than likely going around 70+ and doing burnouts or donuts.(mother fucker was crazy) The single just came out and to this day I still don't know how he got a hold of it or why he bought it he was a rock head. That wailing spooky scream at the beginning had me hooked from the get go. Buffalo Gals was the first song that I ever heard a DJ scratch on a song. The video was even better! My old writing partner Kaze and I first got to watch the video for Buffalo Gals on a TV show called "Night Flight" a year later. I tripped out how in the movie "scratching" all those DJ gave credit to "rocket being the first to have scratching on it" I was thinking bull shit! or maybe just these DJ's first notice "scratching" on that album. But come to think about it Grandmaster Flash put out the " The Official Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash" in 1981, which has scratching and cutting and back spinning breaks featured on the single.

Battle Grounds (z) 2010

I finally had the chance to paint at this event that goes on down in Chula Vista, Ca. The name of the event is called "Battle Groundz*" ...I don't know why...but "hip hop" promoters, Dj's etc... have to always replace a perfectly fine "S" with a "Z" this shit drives me nuts! when did this "type" of nonsence start ? I'm think maybe in the 90's to be used as a gimik to sound more street. anywayz....enuff of that yo! Soo the last 2 years I have been wanting to paint at this event/wall. This wall is perfect to paint on! It gets good light for picture taken the size is on point minus the shrubs, I for got to bring a Machete to fix that problem. Over all the event went off with out a hitch a about 300 people showed up and had about 50 or so graffiti artist showed up to paint.

Pin Up

I have been tattooing for about 11 years now...off and on. Although I though it was my last a few years back when I closed my shop. Well, Just 7 months ago I had the opportunity to work at my good ol friends shop...I jump at the chance., because he is an all around swell guy! And two weeks into work at the shop, they pointed me in the right direction... aka I have been using the wrong machine for color work....for TEN FRIGGING YEARS! UUHHHG! hence one of the reasons out of many... I stopped... because my color work would go out looking GREAT... and then come back looking like and un-polished turd!

So, I'm excited to say that this is my 4Th complete pin up I have ever done on skin. I just finished it Yesterday. Well, I might do one more treatment on the "arms" of the pin up to get the fade better. The client wants his arm sleeved. I plan on adding a Bomber, some P-40's, a Stuka, a few Messerschmitt BF-109's along with clouds and sky. I LOVE tat'n these... but I hardly do them and I wish I could do these all day everyday.... I would be happy.

Min one!

Good to see Min painting again.
It is also a relief to see that he stuck to he's guns and kept to his traditional "MIN" style versus the new styles that kids "be doing" now a days, you know the non foundational letters with sharp points, bars, loops and other non-sense flying of the letters looking like a greek salad on a wall.

I do like how the Duel complements the Min piece. Nowadays this is a practice that is hardly done, were writers would actually get together and work on a "window down" sized wall and than figure out what the lead writers style is and than mimic it. This is how it was done back in the subway days and this is what I did growing up painting with my crew. It's sad to me that this part of NYC subway graffiti tradition is dead.

What I don't like about this photo is all the writing around it... it's too cluttered and takes away the pieces.



Man!!! When it comes to the graffiti greats....This Cat is waaaaay underrated in my book. ...speaking of books I would LOVE to see him put one out!

Man, I have been on a graff spree lately, looking at old flicks , Style Wars, Subway art, etc etc.
I had to get this year started... I have been craving to paint my first piece this year. I have been drawing in my black book daily which helps keep the edge off, just a little, but it's nothing compared to actually going to a yard and paint and that doesn't even compare how it used to feel back when I used to paint illegally. But I'm 40 now 9 arrest a wife 2 kids and a family business. NOT WORTH IT!!! But I can't help to think of those moments out alone in the yards or on the side of the freeway painting my name. Ahhhhhhh.

Besides the graff....I'm still working on my other art in the mean time. This eats most of my free time. So It's nice to have another medium to work with that is different and doesn't take a lot of time to execute. The piece below only took me round 1 hr and 50 minutes to complete. Why am I so focused on how long it takes me to paint a piece? Well, two reasons. One I used to take for ever with my graff/aerosol pieces. It was not enjoyable anymore, especially when I would do technical stuff. (which I love doing) Some of my older piece's would take me weeks to do. I got to the point were I hated to paint commission murals etc because of the time it took and when I would show up to paint I only would work for an hour at a time.

The 2nd reason is this is how the actual act of graffiti writing was operated. You didn't have all night to paint maybe 8 hrs max, the faster the better with the eception of being clean, no drips runs or eras. So now I make a point to myself and blogging that I need to be quicker and more efficient with my pieces, the less time and paint usage the better for me. okay I'm done rambling!

Freestyle

I painted this for my Nephew in 2008 for his birthday. I normally don't freestyle pieces but for some reason (maybe being lazy) I didn't draw an outline. If I had it planned out it would of turned out way better, he loved it and was surprised to see it.
